Cephalexin, found under the brand name Keflex is part of a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. The cell wall has a protective role and keeps the cell contents together. Cephalexin-sensitive bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, E. Cephalexin was authorized by the Federal Drug Administration in January 1971.
It can be found as tablets of 250 g, 500 mg and 1 g, capsules of 250, 333, 500 and 750 mg, as well as powder for suspensionof 125 and 250 mg/5 ml.
Storage: Tablets and capsules should be stored at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F). Suspensions should be kept in the refrigerator and disposed of after 14 days.
Prescribed for: Cephalexin 500 mg is used as treatment for infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to the effects of cephalexin Common infections that are treated with cephalexin 500 mg include infections of the middle ear, tonsils, throat, larynx (laryngitis), bronchi (bronchitis) and pneumonia.
The dosing interval may be every 6 or 12 hours depending on the infection. Cephalexin 500 mg is most commonly administered to adults every 6 hours.
Cases of interactions with other drugs are rare.
Nursing mothers: Most cephalosporins are excreted in breast milk. Nursing mothers should avoid using cephalosporins or stop breastfeeding while taking a cephalosporin.
Side effects: The most common side effects of cephalexin are diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, skin rash, fever, abnormal liver tests and vaginitis. Persons who have proved allergic to penicillin may also be allergic to cephalexin. Patients treated with cephalexin, as with most antibiotics, may also develop pseudomembranous colitis, a mild to severe inflammation of the colon.
